The Austrian born Hubert Schmalix has resided in Los Angeles since 1987. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and came to prominence with a group of artists aptly named the “Neue Wilde” (New Wild). Schmalix’s body of work over the past 30 years has always maintained a classical undertone: images of Christ and the female nude, and his iconic folksy views of the houses surrounding Los Angeles. Hubert’s wife Precy has been his muse for years, revealing not only a significant body of work, but also displaying a true investigation of technique and inspiration. Recently, Schmalix has had numerous shows in his native Austria as well as a solo exhibition at the Neue Galerie Graz. In 1998 he was awarded the Fine Art Prize of the City of Vienna.
